April 25,   2015 Beacon and Legs

2015 Beacon and Legs - Unicycle, Joe Myers Start Line

Riding a Kris Holm KH24 Unicycle with a Schlumpf geared hub Joe Myers placed seventh in the Cat 3 Male 45 and Over at the 2015 Beacon and Legs mountain bike race. The event was at Camp Sekani, Spokane, Washington on April 25, 2015.

The approximately 7 mile course with approximately 1000 ft of elevation gain was almost identical to last year. A few new swoopy "S" turns had been added at the end. These new tight single track turns brought the riders in at a new angle to the finish removing a fast crowded turn into the finish where one pair of riders crashed last year. Without any really long killer climbs the Beacon and Legs is a great blend of fast flow with some spots of tech here and there.

Joe's 2015 finish time of 1:24:48.9 was over eight minutes faster than his time of 1:33:09.3 in 2014.

Next up is the Roslyn Rush on May 16th. Maybe we'll see you there.

March 28,   2015 Beezley Burn

Beezley Burn Start

It was a fourth place finish for unicyclist Joe Myers in the Cat 3 Male 45 and Over riding in the 2015 Beezley Burn mountain bike race at Ephrata, Washington!

The Beezley Burn was a throw back to the 10th anniversary 2005 course. The course that started it all for the Beezley Burn.

2015 Gran Fondo Ephrata Finish

Entrants where warned to expect rocks, short punchy climbs, rocks, and lots of single track (with rocks). Jake Maedke's promise was fulfilled in the rocky 7.3 mile loop with about 770 ft. of climbing. Joe thinks he was on foot for less than a mile total. He managed to ride about 6.5 miles of the loop on his Kris Holm KH24 with a Schlumpf geared hub using Shimano XT PD-780 SPD pedals on 150 cranks and a Magura hydraulic rim brake. The ride started and ended at Lions Park, Ephrata, WA.

Joe finished with a time of 1:29:42.0.

March 15,   2015 Gran Fondo Ephrata

2015 Gran Fondo Ephrata unicycle start

The infamous Gran Fondo Ephrata has become a Pacific Northwest "spring classic" with 80 miles of primitive central WA back roads (30 of those miles on gravel), 5000' of climbing, and of course unpredictable spring weather. For his third year in a row Joe Myers would be attempting to complete it on a unicycle.

2015 Gran Fondo Ephrata Finish

Starting at 6:05 AM on a cold, rainy, and windy morning, Joe Myers had already climbed out of Norton Canyon before the gray, foggy light of day was to prevail. The rain increased through out the morning. Noon found Joe cold, soaked, and shivering uncontrollably at Palisades riding into a head wind in 44 degree F (high temperature for the ride). After a thorough drying, a change of clothes, and a good warming Joe climbed out of the support vehicle into the cold rain and was back on his way.

As each mile rolled under the wheel and the rest of the two wheelers made there way past Joe the rain soaked gravel roads deteriorated. In the final few miles, once again riding on pavement, the rain turned to a misty drizzle. Joe Myers managed to cross the finish 150th completing the approximately 80 miles with a total time of 9:26:12.

Joe Myers rode a Kris Holm KH36 with a Schlumpf geared hub using Shimano XT PD-780 SPD pedals on 150 cranks and a Magura hydraulic rim brake. 60 plus miles of the route in high gear.

February 28,   2015 Echo Red 2 Red XC

2015 Echo Red 2 Red Start at 9:55 AM

Joe Myers showed up riding a Kris Holm KH24 Unicycle with a Schlumpf geared hub for the Cat 3 Men 40 Plus at the 2015 Echo Red 2 Red XC mountain bike race at Echo, Oregon on the morning of February 28, 2015!

Joe pre-arranged for a start time of 9:55 AM for riding a unicycle through the approximately 24 mile middle course. Those who needed two wheels waited another hour plus before they started.

He says "Being the first rider out on the bluff trail was great fun. Shortly after the fence crossing I encountered two tight spots full of tumble weeds the prior night's winds had blown in. I managed to ride through and bust up the first tumble weed jam. But the second tumble weed pileup was a little more challenging." Soon the unicycle started climbing up the pile and left Joe high centered in the thorny mess. He quickly dismounted into the prickles, stepped through the rest of the pile, remounted, and was on his way again enjoying the solitude of being the lone rider through the narrow bluff trails above the Umatilla River.

The rest of the ride was less eventful even though soon the solitude would be replaced with an abundance of two wheeled 'competitors' with more serious intentions. Joe only recalls a couple of UPDs of any possible consequence. Both only required a little 'dusting off'.

It took Joe until 3:06 PM to finish with a total time of 5:11. Joe says "I had a great time. It was a fun and challenging ride!"

May 17,   2014 Roslyn Rush

Roslyn Rush Start

Joe Myers riding a Kris Holm KH24 Unicycle with a Schlumpf geared hub finished with a time of 1:46:08.2 putting him on the podium with a second place finish in the Cat 3 Men 45 and Over at the 2014 Roslyn Rush mountain bike race at Roslyn, Washington May 17, 2014!

The approximately 7 mile course had over 1000 ft of elevation gain per lap. The riders encountered a few short killer climbs mixed with a nice blend of fast single track. A few spots of steep downhill kept everyone smiling. Joe and the other Cat 3 riders completed one lap to finish.

The course was slightly different than the route used two years ago. The major change was a challenging section of trail shortly after the start. Here is a video clip of Joe Sunday afternoon riding down the new section they all climbed up Saturday morning.

April 26,   2014 Beacon and Legs

Beacon And Legs Start

Riding a Kris Holm KH24 Unicycle with a Schlumpf geared hub Joe Myers placed third in the Cat 3 Male 45 and Over on the approx 7 mile course at the 2014 Beacon and Legs mountain bike race at Camp Sekani, Spokane, Washington April 26, 2014!

The course was almost identical to last year. The only change was a rough new section of trail at the end. There is approximately 1000 ft of elevation gain per approximately 7 mile lap, but without any really long killer climbs. It's a great blend of fast flow with a spots of tech here and there.

Joe's finish time of 1:33:09.3 put him on the podium with a third place finish in the Cat 3 Men 45 and Over.

Lana Myers managed to get plenty of sun while she spent her day volunteering and rendering aid as possible!

Starting at 5:30 AM in light winds just after moonset he set out in the pre-dawn dark climbing the Pine Forest Rd Climb. After 10 miles in the dark the first rays of dawn started to penetrate the darkness.

March 29,   2014 Beezley Burn

Beezley Burn Start

Joe Myers claims third place in the Cat 3 Male 45 and Over riding in the 2014 Beezley Burn mountain bike race at Ephrata, Washington March 29, 2014!

Joe rode a Kris Holm KH24 with a Schlumpf geared hub on the 8 mile course at Lions Park, Ephrata, WA with lots of rough and rocky terrain with plenty (900 ft) of short punchy climbs.

Joe still managed to finish with a time of 2:25:02.9 dispite showing up still fighting remnants of the "flu".

When it came time for the awards presentation for the "Cat 3 Male 45 and Over" with only three finishers a podium spot was open for the slowest rider of the day!

March 1,   2014 Echo Red 2 Red XC

Joe and Lana Myers of teamUnicyle traveled to Echo, Oregon for the 2014 Echo Red 2 Red XC. The weather forecasters had been predicting event start time temperatures in the low 20s with snow cooling down through out the ride toward finish temps in the upper teens.

As the end of the 11:00 AM Elite, Cat 1, and Singlespeed Men rode out of town with the temperature at 26 degree F and the wind blowing from the NE at 10 mph Joe joined the end of the line and rode out of town riding a Kris Holm KH24 with 24 inch Schlumpf geared wheel. After about 15 and 03:07:07 later Scott and the gang from Across the Line Timing clocked Joe through the finish line.

Oct 26,   2013 Woolley Cross

Mark Miller

Mark Miller of Bellingham Unicycling hinted to Bungeejoe of teamUnicycle that the Woolley Cross was on Saturday, October 26, 2013 and looked to be a great time and place for unicycle cross. Although Bungeejoe and Lanaboos had been sick all week the pair arose to the call and meet up with Mark for a few laps around the approximately 2 mile course.

Mark was setup for speed - riding a Kris Holm KH29 with 29 inch Schlumpf geared wheel. Bungeejoe was riding a Kris Holm KH29 frame with a 26 inch geared wheel.

With nice weather on a well chosen cyclecross course the two finished smiling. They officially counted Mark as fourth place in the Men's C with three laps at 42:34.00 riding for Bellingham Unicycling. Bungeejoe riding for teamUnicycle officially counted as 13th in Super Men 50+ with two laps in 38:39.00

Ridge Rendezvous   Oct 12, 2013

SammiesRoyBoy and Bungeejoe rendezvoused for an afternoon unicycle ride. Bungeejoe picked the Galbraith Mountain Ridge Trail for a muni (mountain unicycle) ride. With limited time available before dark a quick run was made up to the kiosk/Checkpoint Kilo and back.

Bungeejoe drug out the Kris Holm KH29 with a 26 geared wheel set up to ride and put some flat pedals on the Kris Holm KH24 for SammiesRoyBoy, lowered the seat and off they rode.

With great weather on a great trail the two returned home smiling and hungry.

Crashcason in Bellingham   September 14, 2013

Bungeejoe and Crashcason

Saturday, September 14, 2013 found Bungeejoe and Crashcason putting together a muni (mountain unicycle) ride on Galbraith Mountain trails to coincide with his visit to Bellingham, WA. They ended the ride after putting down some one wheel tracks on Ridge, Cedar Dust, El Pollo, Family Fun Center, Bob's, and Little Karma.

Still with time to spare they played in the street for a while with some of the toys to be found in the garage. A Semcycle 43 inch unicycle and a 50 inch ordinary bike (penny farthing) were next found playing in the streets of Bellingham for awhile.

A smiling Crashcason departed without have any bad crashes, wondering what other toys still lurked in the garage.

Stevens Pass Bike Park   July 12, 2013

Lana's Crash

Lana's helmet after crash

Joe and Lana Myers of teamUnicyle traveled to Stevens Pass Bike Park riding up the chair lift and down the trails. Joe took a Kris Holm 24 mountain unicycle and Lana had her full suspension Norco Phena mountain bike.

They hauled her off the mountain, airlifted her to the Seattle's Harbor View Hospital to the Trauma Center. After fourteen hours in the Trauma Center they released her to go home with "no broken bones" and 30 or 40 stitches.

July 29, 2013, 17 days later we found out she has 4 compression fractured vertebra.

September 3, 2013, fifty-three days after her crash, they told us she broke her neck, a C6 spinous process fracture.

Lana only remembers the ride up the chair lift and waiting to start down Rock Crusher and a few isolated instances. Her next memories jump to almost a week after the crash. Most of our plans are on hold for awhile. We are working through this one day at a time.

We are very thankful for all the help and assistance we have received.

A BIG thank you to every one who has offered, helped, supported, and or prayed for us.
Joe and Lana Myers
